Carnaby's Cockatoo are a flagship species for Perth NRM, as we work to restore and connect essential habitat. Join us to learn about Zoe Kissane's vital research into these endangered species found only in southwest Western Australia, where ongoing habitat loss and land use changes are making survival increasingly difficult.
Zoe's research explores how these birds move through changing landscapes, what habitats they rely on, and the hidden risks they face while feeding in agricultural areas. Using GPS tracking, the study shows that cockatoos travel further and change their movement behaviour when native vegetation is fragmented, highlighting the importance of remaining habitat patches and corridors. The research also investigates pesticide exposure, revealing that many agricultural seed sources used by the birds contain multiple pesticides, including some linked to neurological harm. By combining wildlife tracking with environmental risk assessment, this work provides new insights into how land use and agriculture are affecting Carnaby’s cockatoos and offers practical information to support conservation and landscape management.
