Composting the Johnson-Su Way; Workshop with Robyn Brown

Whether you're a backyard gardener, small landholder, grower, or simply interested in soil health, come along to learn about a easy-to-maintain approach to creating biologically active compost, that can be used as an extract to help kickstart soil biology!

Led by Robyn Brown from Waste Is My Resource, this workshop will introduce the principles of effective composting using the Johnson-Su bioreactor method.

What is Johnson-Su Composting?

• Static aerobic compost method

• A slow, low-maintenance composting method designed to produce biologically rich compost.
• Unlike traditional composting, there's no need to regularly turn the compost, allowing beneficial fungi to grow undisturbed.
• The compost is kept moist (70% water weight) and built to be naturally well-aerated while it matures, usually over around 12 months.
• Once mature, the compost can be mixed with water to make an extract, making it easier to apply across larger areas or even to seeds.

Benefits

• Requiring little labour to maintain (except for set up). No turning needed!
• Can be made into a compost extract, allowing the beneficial microorganisms in a small amount of compost to be applied over a larger area.
• High microbial diversity
• Restores degraded soils by building aggregates and water holding capacity
