Now well into its second year, RegenWA, alongside partners Lower Blackwood Catchment LCDC, is expanding its Make Your Hectare Count project. Funded by the Western Australian Government’s State NRM Program, the key focus is equipping small landholders with the practical knowledge and skills to champion sustainable land management
Since the project’s launch in 2025, videos produced with Tim Thompson have garnered 55,000 views, podcasts created by Lower Blackwood Catchment LCDC have received over 2,000 downloads, and the project’s workshops and webinars have attracted close to 400 participants. 25 factsheets have been completed and are currently in review.
In 2026, attention has turned to a feasibility study for a fee-for-service model for small landholder support. This study will assess demand, preferred services, and willingness to pay, and will ultimately inform a business plan.
A small landholder survey, available here, has been developed to identify information gaps, support needs, and preferred delivery formats. The survey seeks to ascertain willingness to pay for services and understand small landholder experience, motivations, and community connections. It will serve as an initial touchpoint for landholders eager to engage with the project’s subsequent phases.
In mid-August, Tim Thompson will be returning to record further videos showcasing WA’s sustainable land management practices via his popular Farm Learning YouTube channel. Tim and the RegenWA team are slated to visit properties across the Wheatbelt, Great Southern, and Perth Hills to meet the people using canola meal as fertiliser, trialling compost applications in wheat, running their backyard gardens like farms, and enhancing their local environments with finely-tuned horse management strategies. Videos will be released from late August onwards – subscribe to Tim’s channel to be notified when they become available.
