RegenWA’s Accelerating Regenerative Agriculture Adoption project recently approved three new devolved grants for ‘give it a go’ demonstration sites.
By providing financial assistance, facilitating access to expertise, and spotlighting locally relevant examples of regenerative agriculture in practice, these demonstrations aim to reduce social and personal pressures on farmers to try something new, reduce the information vs implementation gap, elevate the importance of natural capital on farms, and reduce synthetic input reliance.
One grant has been provided to a grass finished, regenerative beef enterprise in Calingiri who are set to trial a foliar spray of fish hydrolysate, humic acid, worm extract and kelp to increase soil biological activity.
Another has been allocated to a horticulturalist and horse owner in Cowalla seeking to demonstrate how contour ripping, strategic native revegetation and on-farm biological soil amendments can improve water infiltration, soil health, biodiversity and pasture resilience.
The third aims to demonstrate practical applications of regenerative methods in the Bailup area, specifically the establishment of perennial pastures. These sheep producers will grow their understanding of their land’s capacity to support perennial pastures by seeding and then fencing off the selected area to exclude livestock.
Supporting farmers to trial new practices in a low-risk, well-resourced way delivers benefits far beyond that farm. When one producer demonstrates that something works, or uncovers gaps and challenges, neighbouring landholders gain a local, trusted reference point rather than having to rely on distant examples or take on the full risk themselves. This ripple effect strengthens the resilience across regional communities and catchments while also building the kind of peer-to-peer knowledge sharing that underpins long-term, lasting change.
This is evidenced by feedback from one recipient of an earlier grant, who told RegenWA about the attention her demonstration site was receiving: “People are…deciding to follow suit. The big farmers are watching and thinking and wanting to take new action!”
