PROJECT
Supported through funding from the Western Australian Government’s State NRM Program, this project is designed to deliver measurable shifts in how the WA agricultural industry interacts with the environment.
In 2024, Perth NRM successfully completed a project that measured natural capital (NC) on 20 WA farms as a part of a national initiative using the Natural Capital Accounting methodology. This project baselined on-farm natural assets and past management practices as a snapshot in time.
From early 2026, RegenWA Ltd. will re-audit 5 of these farms to measure NC changes over time, incorporate new technologies and measure additional NC assets.
The project will include a comprehensive extension program producing new evidence based resources and community engagement. It will use this data to create farm plans and self-investment pathways to achieve better landscape scale restoration alongside agricultural productivity.
The project will run for two years, from early 2026 to early 2028.
Re-audit previously baselined farms to establish robust, long-term frameworks for detecting and measuring changes in farm natural capital over time.
Expand the scope of Natural Capital Accounting (NCA) by integrating critical new metrics, including water quality, eDNA fauna surveys, soil function, and advanced soil characterisation.
Validate an improved NCA process that accurately captures ecological shifts, ensuring data-driven reliability for supply chains and policymakers.
Develop evidence-based management plans that link environmental restoration directly to farm business budgets, creating a sustainable pathway for farmers to self-fund conservation activities.
Build transparency and confidence among consumers and stakeholders in businesses that adopt rigorous NCA methodologies.
Increase the skills and confidence of farmers, industry leaders, and the community in the benefits of farm monitoring and nature-based solutions.
Cultivate an industry-wide willingness to adopt nature-based alternatives, ultimately reducing the necessity for synthetic farm inputs.
5 follow-up NCA assessments and reports.
2 LEAFlet farm planning and budget reviews for guiding management practices.
Community and industry communications (articles, social media, webpages, case studies, videos).
5 presentations at grower/landcare group workshops
10 webinars
8 on-farm workshops
5 farm videos
1 public project wrap up to discuss achievements (farmer-based panel), lessons learnt and next steps.
